সম্প্রতি, বাংলাদেশ ছাত্রলীগের (বিসিএল) সদস্যরা নজিরবিহীন প্রতিকূলতার সম্মুখীন হয়েছে যা বাংলাদেশের ন্যায়বিচার, সাম্য ও গণতন্ত্রের নীতিকে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ করেছে। একসময় আমাদের দেশের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনের প্রাণ ছাত্রলীগ, স্বল্প সংখ্যক সদস্যের নীতি বিচ্যুতির জন্য সারাদেশে হাজার হাজার সদস্যকে দোষারপ করা হচ্ছে। বিসিএল, একটি গৌরবময় ইতিহাস সমৃদ্ধ একটি বিশাল প্রতিষ্ঠান, যা আমাদের দেশের স্বাধীনতার ভিত্তি পর্যন্ত প্রসারিত, এখন এক ধরনের নিপীড়নের মুখোমুখি হয়েছে যা স্পষ্টতই বৈষম্যের বহিঃপ্রকাশ
বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতায় ছাত্রলীগের অবদান অনস্বীকার্য। ১৯৬০ এবং ১৯৭০ এর দশকের গোড়ার দিকে, ছাত্রলীগের সদস্যরা ছাত্র আন্দোলনের নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিল যা জাতীয় স্বাধীনতার পথ প্রশস্ত করেছিল। তাদের প্রচেষ্টা, ত্যাগ এবং একটি স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের স্বপ্ন আমাদের সার্বভৌমত্বের ভিত্তি তৈরি করেছে। সরকার, এই শক্তিশালী স্টেকহোল্ডার এবং শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের জন্য এখন ছাত্রলীগকে সম্পূর্ণ নিষিদ্ধ করা, এর সদস্যদের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বহিষ্কার করা এবং তাদের সরকারি চাকরির জন্য অযোগ্য ঘোষণা করা কেবল একটি গুরুতর বৈষম্যই নয়, আমাদের জাতীয় পরিচয় ও ইতিহাসের প্রতিও অবমাননাকর। .
ছাত্রলীগের সদস্যদের যে শাস্তি দেওয়া হয়েছে তা ব্যক্তিগত এবং ন্যায়সঙ্গত নয় বরং অসম এবং সামষ্টিক বলে মনে হচ্ছে। যদিও সংগঠনের মধ্যে এমন কিছু ব্যক্তি থাকতে পারে যারা অপরাধ করেছে, তবে ইহা ছাত্রলীগের প্রতিটি সদস্যকে শাস্তি দেয়ার জন্য ব্যবহার করা যায় না এবং করা উচিত নয়। ছাত্রলীগের হাজার হাজার কর্মী যারা তাদের সমাজের জন্য ইতিবাচকভাবে অবদান রেখেছেন, যারা সংগঠনের আদর্শকে সমুন্নত রেখেছেন এবং একটি উন্নত বাংলাদেশ গড়তে সচেষ্ট হয়েছেন, তাদের আজ রাতারাতি দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর নাগরিকের কাতারে নামিয়ে দেয়া হচ্ছে। এমনকি ছাত্রলীগের প্রাক্তন সদস্যদের তাদের চাকরি থেকে বহিষ্কার করা এবং বর্তমান সদস্যদের সরকারি চাকরি থেকে পরিত্যাজ্য ঘোষনা করা, বাংলাদেশের ন্যায়পরায়ণতা, ন্যায়বিচার এবং গণতান্ত্রিক প্রতিনিধিত্বের নীতিকে ক্ষুন্ন করে।
বাংলাদেশের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো থেকে BCL সদস্যদের বহিষ্কার করছে। কোনো প্রমাণিত অপরাধ ছাড়াই, শুধুমাত্র একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাথে সংশ্লিষ্টতার ভিত্তিতে শিক্ষার মৌলিক অধিকার থেকে তাদের বঞ্চিত করছে। এই সম্মিলিত শাস্তি নির্দোষ এবং অপরাধীর মধ্যে পার্থক্য করতে ব্যর্থ হয়, আমাদের শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের সততা নীতি আদর্রশের উপর কালিমা লেপন করে। এই নিপীড়ন সকলের জন্য শিক্ষার অধিকারকে ক্ষুণ্ণ করে- অথচ উচিত ছিল সমাজে ইতিবাচকভাবে অবদান রাখা ব্যক্তিদের ক্ষমতায়ন, আলোকিত এবং ভবিষ্যতের জন্য প্রস্তুত করা। তাদের শিক্ষা এবং কর্মের সুবিধাবঞ্চিত করে আমরা প্রকৃত অর্থে জনসংখ্যার একটি বৃহৎ অংশের আকাঙ্খা, স্বপ্ন এবং ভবিষ্যতের অধিকার সম্পূর্ণভাবে ছিনিয়ে নিচ্ছি।
বর্তমান ছাত্রলীগের সদস্যদের সরকারি চাকরি থেকে অযোগ্য ঘোষণা করা এবং সাবেক সদস্যদের তাদের পদ থেকে বহিষ্কার করা, নাগরিক হিসেবে তাদের অধিকারের চরম লঙ্ঘনকে উপস্থাপন করে। সরকারি চাকরি হাজার হাজার স্নাতক এবং যুবকদের জন্য একটি জীবন গড়ার সুযোগ। সরকারের বর্তমান অবস্থান এই নাগরিকদের তাদের নিজের দেশের মধ্যে একটি প্রান্তিক, বিচ্ছিন্ন, দুর্বল সম্প্রদায়ে পরিণত করার ঝুঁকি তৈরি করে — যারা অধিকার, সুযোগ এবং স্বত্ববোধ থেকে বঞ্চিত। বাংলাদেশকে অবশ্যই বৈষম্যের এই পথটি এড়িয়ে চলতে হবে।
বাংলাদেশ ছাত্রলীগের অবদানের কথা স্মরণ করা অপরিহার্য। এই সংগঠনের সদস্যরা আমাদের জাতীয় পরিচয় এবং আকাঙ্ক্ষাকে একটি রাষ্ট্রের রূপ দিতে সাহায্য করেছে। গুটিকয়েক ব্যক্তির কর্মের ভিত্তিতে হঠাৎ করে তাদেরকে সমাজে স্থানের জন্য অযোগ্য ঘোষণা করা যেমন অযৌক্তিক তেমনি অন্যায়। এই পথটি এমন একটি সমাজ তৈরির ঝুঁকি তৈরি করে যেখানে একজন নাগরিকদের শুধুমাত্র চরিত্র বা কর্মের পরিবর্তে অনুষঙ্গ দ্বারা বিচার করা হয়- এটি একটি বিপজ্জনক নজির যা আমাদের গণতান্ত্রিক মূল্যবোধকে ক্ষুন্ন করে।
স্বাধীনতা ও সাম্যের আদর্শে নির্মিত একটি জাতি হিসেবে, দ্বিতীয় স্তরের নাগরিকদের একটি শ্রেণী তৈরি করার যেকোনো অপচেষ্টাকে প্রতিহত করা প্রত্যেকের নাগরিক দায়িত্ব। আমরা সরকার, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ এবং সকল স্টেকহোল্ডারদের তাদের অবস্থান পুনর্বিবেচনা করার জন্য অনুরোধ করছি। এর সমাধান নিষেধাজ্ঞা, বহিষ্কার বা চাকরির জন্য অযোগ্যতা ঘোষনার মধ্যে নয়, বরং আইনের শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠা করা। আমাদের এমন একটি সমাজ ব্যবস্থা দরকার যা নাগরিকদের মর্যাদা, অধিকার এবং সুযোগগুলি সংরক্ষণ করে অন্যায়ের শাস্তি নিশ্চিত করে।
আসুন আমরা ক্ষমতা চিরস্থায়ী করার উদ্দেশ্যে অন্যায়কে উস্কে দিয়ে ইতিহাসের ভুলের পুনরাবৃত্তি না করি। হাজার হাজার তরুণ বাংলাদেশির ভবিষ্যত হুমকির মুখে, এবং এর সাথে বাংলাদেশেরও।
A Call for Justice and Fairness for Bangladesh Chhatra League Members

Recently, the members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have faced unprecedented adversity that threatens the principles of justice, equality, and democracy in Bangladesh. Once the heart and soul of our nation’s independence movement, the BCL is being vilified as a result of the actions of a select few, leading to sweeping repercussions for its tens of thousands of members across the country. The BCL, a storied institution with a history that stretches back to the very foundations of our country’s freedom, now faces a form of persecution that borders on an apartheid-like segregation within our society.
The contributions of the BCL to the independence of Bangladesh cannot be overstated. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, BCL members led the student movements that paved the way for national independence. Their efforts, sacrifices, and vision of a free Bangladesh formed the bedrock of our sovereignty. For the government, powerful stakeholders, and educational institutions to now seek the outright banning of the BCL, expel its members from universities, and declare them disqualified for government jobs, is not only a grave injustice but also an affront to our national identity and history.
The punishment meted out to BCL members appears disproportionate and collective, rather than individual and just. While there may indeed be individuals within the organization who have committed offences, this cannot and should not be used to condemn every member of the BCL. Tens of thousands of BCL activists who have contributed positively to their communities upheld the ideals of the organization, and sought to build a better Bangladesh are being made second-class citizens overnight. Expelling former BCL members from their jobs and barring current members from government employment are actions that undermine principles of fairness, justice, and democratic representation in Bangladesh.
Universities across Bangladesh are summarily expelling BCL members, depriving them of the right to education based on mere association with an organization rather than any proven wrongdoing. This collective punishment fails to distinguish between the innocent and the guilty, casting a dark shadow over the integrity of our educational institutions. The persecution of these young individuals undermines the very purpose of education—to empower, enlighten, and enable individuals to contribute positively to society. By labeling them as undeserving or, worse, unworthy of opportunity, we effectively strip an entire demographic of their aspirations, dreams, and right to a future.
Moreover, the disqualification of current BCL members from government jobs and the retroactive expulsion of former members from their positions represent a gross violation of their rights as citizens. Government jobs are a lifeline for thousands of graduates and youth. The government’s current stance risks turning these citizens into a marginalized community within their own country—stripped of rights, opportunities, and a sense of belonging. Bangladesh must avoid this path of discrimination that resembles apartheid—a system we have vocally opposed on the global stage.
It is imperative that we remember the contributions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Its members have helped shape the identity and aspirations of our nation. To suddenly declare them unfit for a place in society based on the actions of a few individuals is as absurd as it is unjust. This path risks creating a society where individuals are judged solely by their affiliations rather than their character or actions, a dangerous precedent that undermines our democratic values.
As a nation built on ideals of freedom and equality, we must question any attempts to create a class of second-tier citizens. We urge the government, university authorities, and all stakeholders to reconsider their stance. The solution lies not in bans, expulsions, or job disqualifications but in targeted action against individuals who are found to have violated the law, regardless of their affiliations. We need a system that punishes wrongdoing while preserving the dignity, rights, and opportunities for the innocent majority.
Let us not repeat the mistakes of history by allowing injustice to fester in the name of expediency. The future of thousands of young Bangladeshis is at stake, and with it, the future of Bangladesh itself.
